Aardplaat is a company working on the bigger picture
Aardplaat is the result of a personal exploration of the earth and a lifelong investigation in the world, which has sparked a new way of looking at the world, a new sense of awareness. With Aardplaat we want to share and spread this new perspective and remind us of the bigger picture.
Aardplaat attempts to bring a different kind of art. An art that has always been there, but only recently has been revealed due to technological development of the past decades. An art that we believe is refreshing and self-transcendent. Art with a story, a real story. An art that speaks for itself. Art that sparks a new sense of awareness. A new perspective that we hope will revitalize our connection to Earth.
We strive to collect the most intriguing images of the earth. Both from existing sources, and from our own digital exploration. We would like to invite you to join us in this exploration. Because part of the fun is the journey, the searching.
Together we can collect and discover the story of Earth.
Each picture of the earth contains a story, even each pixel has a story in itself. Both in how it came to be, and to all the stories that have taken place in that scene. We would like to spark an interest in the question: ‘What is the story of this piece of earth?’ The artworks that we offer are an invitation to explore the unknown, to new perspectives. So that we strengthen our connection to the earth, and to the unknown.
You can become part of the exploration:
- Weet jij meer over een plaats die wij aanbieden, deel dit met ons.
- If you have an idea on how we can dive into the story in a creative way, let us know.
- If we can give an artwork more meaning by for example connection to a charity that protects the depicted area or works on a topic related to it, we would like to add such options.
In sharing the beauty of the earth, we also want to preserve it. While you enjoy your piece of earth, you inspire yourself, others, and us to build a world in which the earth gets a more central role. In the meantime we do an effort on our side to contribute to a better, sustainable world. Both by contributing to projects that we believe in and by raising awareness on important topics. We’ve got a close connection to the organisation By the Ocean we Unite, an organisation that raises awareness on plastic pollution and combines this with action to create cleaner oceans. 10% of our earnings are dedicated to support their work, which we believe is very important. In the future we want to expand our network of involved organisations, so that we can support more important causes.
If you’ve got suggestions on organisations that would be interested in collaborating, let us know.
``The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands but seeing with new eyes.``
Hi, my name is Bart. I’ve been fascinated with satellite images ever since they became widely available on Google Maps. It’s quite special that it enables you to discover the world from your computer screen. So for a 14 year old kid this is a very cheap way of ‘travelling’. I spend hours imagining what it’s like to live on the other side of the world, or just gazing upon images that make you wonder what the hell you are looking at and how weird it is that it is all part of the planet we live on. During this exploration, when I was older, I came to see the beauty in the images of the earth and the intrinsic artistic value they have. It didn’t take long before the idea emerged to put it on the wall as art. This got combined with an entrepreneurial ambition that inspired me to bring it to a broader audience.
Now that I’m older and working on making this a reality, I not only fancy the images and the entrepreneurial part, but also like to make a positive change in the world. I see this business and the images we spread as a vehicle to raise awareness on the bigger picture of the lives we live here on Earth. And would like to use this to create movement towards building a better world.
I believe all change starts with a change in awareness. So an important part of invoking change is to make ourselves aware of ourselves and the world around us. I hope the work we do at Aardplaat can inspire people to look differently at themselves and the world we live in.
